The Team

Management

Tom Hedman, Ph.D. - Orthopeutics’ founder, and ILS’s CSO and Chairman, Tom has been involved in orthopaedic research and development since 1983, with a focus on spinal biomechanics since 1985. He is currently an Associate Professor at Texas A&M in the Biomedical Engineering Department. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and made scores of scientific presentations around the world. He currently has several issued or pending patents of which he is the first or sole inventor, including the first of its kind “2nd generation” disc replacement device issued in 1988. His graduate bioengineering training was at MIT and the University of Strathclyde. Dr. Hedman has previously pioneered several novel techniques for quantifying joint stability, fatigue-induced degradation of collagenous soft tissues and for non-destructive determination of elastic and viscoelastic properties of biological tissues. These techniques provide our research team with a technical edge to stay ahead of the competition in demonstrating likely mechanical performance of treated tissues.

Eric Hauck - President and CEO has extensive success bringing disruptive technologies to market with proven positive monetary outcomes to its early investors. He has 17 years of experience as a CEO and President.Additionally, he has managed several worldwide patent portfolios and has been successful in leading several patent litigation suits resulting in multi-million dollar settlements and licenses. He has extensive worldwide experience in the creation of distribution chains and manufacturing plants. He has overseen the transition of a large consumer electronics company becoming ISO-9002 compliant and implementation of CM II process in manufacturing. He is known for his fiscal management and creative solutions for growing small companies to become successful large companies and for his wisdom in managing IP to maintain the competitive ability of a small company to succeed in today’s worldwide market.

Paul Slusarewicz Ph.D. - Paul is a protein biochemist and cell biologist who holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of London. He has over 12 years of industrial R&D experience in the United Kingdom, France, New York and Texas. After two years of post-doctoral research at Dartmouth Medical School, Paul joined Unilever Research where he ran the corporate Hair Follicle Biology research program. He then developed and managed the Protein Biochemistry program for Mojave Therapeutics, a start-up biotechnology company developing therapeutic vaccines against various cancers and HIV. Prior to joining Intralink Spine Paul managed the Biopharmaceutical Services group at DPT Laboratories in San Antonio, Texas, where he developed products in the area of enzymatic wound debridement and helped to support the company’s marketed products. Paul then moved on to lead the Central Research Division of DPT’s parent company, DFB Pharmaceutical, focusing in the areas of dermatology and wound healing. Paul’s experience in both industrial research and development has resulted in over ten peer-reviewed publications, numerous poster presentations and six issued patents (on four of which he is the sole or primary inventor). Paul is our Biochemistry Program Director and currently manages our internal biochemistry program and pre-clinical and manufacturing outsourcing.

Bryan Kirking - We are proud to announce a new team member joining us to begin development of our injection delivery system and support the ongoing mechanical testing for out NEXT technology. He is Bryan Kirking formally of ProbaSci LLC, an Austin based medical device company; where he designed and executed finite element models to evaluate product performance. He also implemented a strict validation and verification protocol to quantify and ensure accuracy of FEA models, designed and execute mechanical testing using servo-hydraulic and custom test rigs and provided written reports for work suitable for FDA submissions and ISO quality control procedures. Bryan also worked for Zimmer Inc., formerly Centerpulse Orthopedics of Austin, Texas where he identified deficiencies in joint arthroplasty design and directed research to understand their causes. He led the development and design of new research projects and coordinated efforts in cadaver testing, computer simulation, lab technology development, and external laboratory partnerships. We are very pleased to have Bryan join our team!
